Quantitative-Dominant Transformative Mixed Methods Design

Also known as: QUAN-dominant transformative MMR, transformative mixed methods (quantitative priority), transformative QUAN-priority design, advocacy-framed mixed methods (quantitative emphasis)

Quantitative-dominant transformative mixed methods design embeds a transformative theoretical lens — such as feminist, critical race, or disability theory — as the overarching framework of a study while assigning greater weight and priority to quantitative data collection and analysis. Qualitative data play a secondary, supplementary role, typically contextualising or deepening statistical findings. The design is common in social justice, equity, and advocacy-oriented applied research where large-scale measurement is essential but must be grounded in an explicit commitment to marginalized communities.

When to use it

Use this design when: (1) the study is explicitly oriented toward social justice, equity, or advocacy for a marginalized group; (2) large-scale quantitative evidence is needed to establish the scope or prevalence of an issue; and (3) qualitative data are needed to explain mechanisms or give voice to lived experience, but are not the primary evidential strand. It suits program evaluation, health disparities research, education equity studies, and policy research where statistical power is essential. Do not use it when: the transformative framework is merely cosmetic and does not actually shape the research; the qualitative and quantitative components deserve equal weight (use concurrent triangulation instead); or when the research context is exploratory with no pre-existing measurement instrument, in which case an exploratory sequential design is more appropriate.

Strengths
  • Combines the evidential breadth of large-scale quantitative data with the explanatory depth of qualitative inquiry under a unified, equity-oriented framework.
  • The explicit transformative lens reduces the risk of research that inadvertently reproduces harmful assumptions about marginalized groups.
  • Quantitative dominance provides statistical power, generalizability, and credibility with policy audiences who demand numerical evidence.
  • The supplementary qualitative strand gives voice to affected communities, increasing the interpretive richness and ethical accountability of the study.
  • Well-suited to applied and evaluation contexts where the study must demonstrate impact as well as justify advocacy recommendations.
Limitations
  • Requires deep familiarity with both a transformative theoretical tradition and quantitative methods — a demanding combination for a single researcher or small team.
  • The secondary qualitative component may not receive the methodological rigour it deserves if resources are concentrated on the dominant quantitative strand.
  • Findings may be challenged by audiences who view advocacy-oriented frameworks as compromising scientific neutrality.
  • Integrating strands from paradigmatically different traditions (positivist measurement and interpretivist inquiry) requires explicit philosophical justification that reviewers may scrutinise.

Frequently asked

How does this differ from a standard quantitative-dominant concurrent or sequential design?

The distinguishing feature is the transformative theoretical lens, which is not decorative. In a standard quantitative-dominant design, theoretical framing is typically post-positivist or constructivist and does not foreground equity or advocacy. In a transformative variant, a framework such as feminist theory, critical race theory, or disability studies actively shapes research questions, sampling decisions, instrument wording, and the application of findings. Without a genuine transformative framework guiding the design, the study is simply a standard quantitative-priority mixed methods study.

Does quantitative dominance mean the qualitative data are unimportant?

No. Dominance refers to the relative weight assigned to each strand in answering the primary research question and in the evidence hierarchy presented to audiences. The qualitative data must still be collected rigorously and analysed with appropriate methods. Their role is explanatory and contextualising rather than primary, but that role must be fulfilled substantively — not through token quotes.

Which transformative frameworks are most commonly used?

Feminist theory, critical race theory, disability studies (including the social model of disability), post-colonialism and indigenous methodologies, and queer theory are the most cited in the mixed methods literature. The choice of framework should match the specific population and social justice concern at the centre of the research, and the researcher must be knowledgeable about the framework's epistemological claims.

Can this design be used in randomised controlled trials?

Yes, with careful thought. An RCT or quasi-experimental design can serve as the quantitative strand if the intervention is oriented toward equity. The transformative framework would then shape who is recruited, how outcomes are selected (including participant-defined outcomes), and how results are communicated back to communities. Mertens and other scholars have described transformative approaches to experimental evaluation in social programs.

How should integration be reported in a journal article?

Integration should be made explicit rather than implicit. Common approaches include joint displays (tables or figures that place quantitative results alongside illustrative qualitative themes for direct comparison), narrative integration sections that discuss how the strands converge or diverge, and a dedicated discussion paragraph that interprets findings through the transformative lens. Reviewers expect to see not just parallel reporting of two strands but genuine integration.
