Embedded transformative mixed methods is a research design that nests one type of data (quantitative or qualitative) inside a dominant dataset of the other type, with both strands guided by an overarching transformative framework — such as feminist, disability rights, or social justice theory. The design serves research questions where statistical breadth and in-depth qualitative insight must both speak directly to equity, empowerment, or systemic change goals.

When to use it
Use this design when (1) your primary research question requires one dominant type of data but a secondary question is best answered by the other type nested within it, and (2) the study is explicitly oriented toward social justice, equity, or empowerment outcomes for a marginalised or underserved group. It is well suited to program evaluations, community-based participatory research, disability studies, gender studies, and Indigenous research. Do not use it when the transformative lens is grafted on superficially — the framework must genuinely guide every design decision. Avoid it when the embedded strand is so small that it adds little beyond anecdote, or when the research context is politically neutral and an advocacy stance would compromise stakeholder trust.

What makes this design 'transformative' rather than simply 'embedded'?
In a standard embedded design, the embedding is a structural decision about data types and priority. The transformative variant adds an overarching worldview — such as feminist, critical race, or disability rights theory — that governs why the study is conducted, whose perspectives are centred, how data are interpreted, and how findings are used. If the social-justice orientation is absent or cosmetic, the design is simply embedded mixed methods.
Does the primary strand have to be quantitative?
No. Either strand can be primary. A qualitative ethnography with an embedded quantitative survey is equally legitimate. The choice depends on which type of data best addresses the dominant research question. In practice, program evaluations often make quantitative outcomes primary; community-based participatory studies often make qualitative understanding primary.
When should I integrate the two strands?
Integration can occur during data collection (if the embedded strand informs primary data gathering), during analysis (comparing or merging findings), or during interpretation (using one strand to explain the other). The integration point must be specified in the research design; leaving it vague produces what researchers call a 'mixing failure' — two parallel studies dressed as one.
How do I handle disagreements between strands?
Discordant findings are analytically valuable, not a problem to hide. The transformative framework guides interpretation: ask whose experience each strand captures and why the strands diverge. Divergence often reveals that aggregate quantitative patterns obscure important differences for marginalised sub-groups — exactly the kind of insight the design is built to surface.
Is community involvement required?
Required is too strong a word, but it is strongly expected. Mertens and other transformative methodologists argue that conducting research on a community without involving community members in design and interpretation reproduces the power imbalances the framework aims to challenge. Participatory co-design, community advisory boards, and member-checking are recommended practice.
