The mixed methods matrix is a systematic framework for classifying, planning, and comparing mixed methods research designs along key dimensions such as timing (concurrent vs. sequential), priority (quantitative- vs. qualitative-dominant), and point of integration. It provides researchers with a structured map to make design decisions explicit, communicate choices transparently, and locate a study within the broader mixed methods typology.

When to use it

Use the mixed methods matrix when designing or evaluating a study that combines quantitative and qualitative strands and when the researcher needs to specify the design type unambiguously. It is especially valuable in doctoral theses, grant proposals, systematic reviews of mixed methods literature, and multi-site research programs where design consistency is essential. It is also the right tool when auditing or replicating an existing mixed methods study. Do not treat the matrix as a data-analysis technique — it classifies and plans designs but does not analyse data. Avoid applying it when the study is strictly qualitative or strictly quantitative, or when design flexibility must be maintained throughout a participatory or emergent inquiry.

Limitations
  • The matrix is a planning and classification tool, not an analysis technique — it produces no data and no findings on its own.
  • Rigid cell boundaries may not capture genuinely emergent or fluid designs where strand priorities shift during data collection.
  • Assumes the researcher can specify design parameters in advance; poorly suited to fully inductive or participatory designs where structure evolves.
  • The proliferation of named design types in the matrix can be overwhelming for novice researchers and may encourage superficial labelling without deep methodological engagement.

Is the mixed methods matrix a research method or a planning tool?

It is primarily a planning and classification tool, not a data-collection or analysis method. It helps researchers specify and communicate the structural features of a mixed methods design — timing, priority, and integration — but it does not generate data or findings. The actual research methods are the quantitative and qualitative strands nested within the design.

How does the matrix differ from a specific mixed methods design like the explanatory sequential design?

The matrix is the overarching framework that contains all named design types as cells. The explanatory sequential design is one specific cell in that matrix — defined by sequential timing, quantitative priority, and integration at the interpretation stage. The matrix gives you the vocabulary and structure; specific design types are the entries within it.

Can I use the matrix to classify an existing published study?

Yes. This is one of its most common uses in systematic reviews and methodological audits. You read the methods section of the published study and assign it a matrix cell based on timing, priority, and integration. Discrepancies between the stated design label and the actual procedures are a common finding in such audits.

What do I do if my design does not fit neatly into any matrix cell?

First, check whether a multiphase or transformative design better captures the complexity. If the design genuinely spans multiple phases with shifting priorities, document that explicitly rather than forcing it into a single cell. The matrix is a heuristic guide, not a rigid taxonomy — transparency about why your design deviates from standard types is methodologically acceptable.

Does using the matrix guarantee methodological quality?

No. Classification is necessary but not sufficient for quality. A study can be correctly labelled in the matrix and still have poor integration, inadequate sample sizes for one strand, or misaligned research questions. The matrix ensures design transparency; quality depends on how well the design is actually implemented.
