The sequential mixed methods matrix is an integration tool used in sequential mixed methods designs — explanatory (QUAN → qual) or exploratory (qual → QUAN) — to display and synthesize quantitative results and qualitative findings side-by-side in a structured table. Also called a joint display matrix, it makes the process of connecting the two strands of evidence explicit, transparent, and auditable, helping researchers draw meta-inferences that neither strand alone could support.

When to use it
Use a sequential mixed methods matrix when your research question genuinely requires both quantitative breadth and qualitative depth, and when one strand logically precedes and informs the other. It is most appropriate when you want to explain unexpected quantitative results with qualitative data (explanatory sequential), or when you need qualitative exploration to build a valid instrument or theory before testing it quantitatively (exploratory sequential). Do not use this design if the research question can be answered adequately with one method alone — adding a second strand solely for prestige inflates cost and complexity without analytical payoff. Also avoid it when time or resources permit only one phase of data collection.

What is the difference between a sequential mixed methods matrix and convergent mixed methods?
In convergent mixed methods, quantitative and qualitative data are collected concurrently and then compared. In sequential designs, one strand precedes and explicitly informs the other. The matrix in a sequential design therefore has a directional logic — each row or column reflects how the first strand shaped or is explained by the second — rather than a side-by-side parallel comparison.
Does the quantitative strand always come first in a sequential design?
No. In the explanatory sequential design (QUAN → qual), quantitative data come first and qualitative data explain the results. In the exploratory sequential design (qual → QUAN), qualitative data come first to build theory or an instrument, which is then tested quantitatively. The choice depends on the research purpose, not a universal rule.
How do I decide what goes in the rows and columns of the matrix?
The organizing unit should reflect your research question. If you are comparing groups, rows are groups and columns are quantitative result and qualitative theme. If you are mapping themes, rows are themes and columns carry the evidence from each strand. Guetterman et al. (2015) provide several worked examples of matrix structures for different research purposes.
Can I use a mixed methods matrix in a single-strand study?
The joint display matrix is specifically designed for mixed methods integration and requires at least one quantitative and one qualitative evidence stream. Using it in a single-strand study would be inappropriate and misleading. For purely qualitative work, thematic tables or concept maps serve a similar organizational function.
Is mixed methods always better than a single method?
No. Mixed methods is appropriate only when the research question genuinely requires both types of evidence and when one strand cannot answer what the other strand raises. Adding a second strand when it is not needed wastes resources and can muddy conclusions. The decision should be driven by the research question, not by a desire to appear more rigorous.
