Evaluation-Oriented Mixed Methods Matrix

When to use it

Use this design when conducting a program evaluation that requires evidence from multiple data types — for example, outcome statistics alongside participant experience — and when the integration logic must be made transparent to non-methodologist audiences such as funders, policymakers, or program managers. It is especially appropriate when evaluation questions differ in nature (some confirmatory, some exploratory) and when accountability to diverse stakeholders demands an auditable decision trail. Do not use it as a substitute for choosing a specific mixed methods design; the matrix is a planning and communication tool, not a data-collection design in itself. Avoid it when the evaluation has a single, well-specified question answerable by one method, or when stakeholders require a rapid, low-cost assessment that cannot support the multi-strand data collection the matrix implies.

Is the mixed methods matrix a research design or just a planning tool?

It is primarily a planning and communication tool. The matrix displays the decisions that constitute the design — strand types, timing, priority, and integration points — but does not specify the design itself. Each cell in the matrix must be backed by a fully specified quantitative or qualitative method. Think of the matrix as the blueprint that references the design rather than the design itself.

How is the evaluation-oriented matrix different from a standard mixed methods matrix?

The evaluation-oriented version adds a column or dimension for evaluative criteria — what stakeholders define as success or failure — and explicitly encodes stakeholder values in the interpretation step. A standard matrix focuses on methodological logic; the evaluation-oriented version also encodes the normative framework that guides judgment of the evidence.

Can I use this matrix in academic research rather than program evaluation?

Yes, but the evaluation-oriented framing is most natural when there is an explicit evaluative purpose and a stakeholder audience that needs to see the decision logic. In purely academic research without an external evaluation client, a standard mixed methods matrix or a specific design such as concurrent triangulation or explanatory sequential is usually more appropriate.

How detailed should each cell in the matrix be?

Sufficient detail for a methodologically literate colleague to understand what data will be collected, from whom, when, and how they will be analyzed — typically three to five sentences or a structured set of bullet points per cell. The matrix is a summary document; detailed protocols belong in appendices or method-specific sections of the evaluation plan.

What software is useful for constructing and managing the matrix?

No specialized software is required. Most evaluators build the matrix in a spreadsheet or a table in a word processor. Mixed methods project management tools and qualitative data software such as NVivo can help manage individual strands, but the matrix itself is a conceptual and communicative document rather than a computational one.
