A multiple case-based single case study — also called an embedded single-case design — is a qualitative strategy in which a researcher investigates one bounded case (the primary unit of analysis) by systematically examining multiple embedded sub-units within it. Rather than studying several separate cases for comparison, the design focuses all analytical attention on one overarching case while using variation across its internal sub-units to build a richer, more robust understanding of that single case.

When to use it
Use this design when you need an in-depth understanding of one bounded phenomenon, organization, or event, and you expect that the case contains meaningful internal variation that can illuminate it more fully. It is appropriate when the case is genuinely unique, critical, or extreme; when the research question asks 'how' or 'why' rather than 'how many'; and when you have access to multiple internal sub-units or data sources within the case. Do not use it when you actually want to compare across independent cases — use a multiple-case design instead. Avoid it when the case has no discernible internal sub-units, as the embedded structure adds complexity without benefit in that situation.

What makes this different from a standard single-case study?
A holistic single-case study treats the case as one undifferentiated whole and draws all evidence at that level. An embedded (multiple case-based) single-case study explicitly identifies and analyzes multiple sub-units within the case before synthesizing findings at the case level. The extra step of sub-unit analysis allows the researcher to surface internal variation and triangulate evidence, producing a more granular account.
How is this different from a multiple-case study?
In a multiple-case study the researcher selects several distinct, independent cases and compares them to develop theoretical propositions. In an embedded single-case design all sub-units belong to one case — they are not independent cases. The goal is not cross-case comparison but rather using internal variation to understand the single overarching case more fully.
How many embedded sub-units should I include?
There is no fixed rule. Sub-units should reflect meaningful analytical distinctions within the case — enough to capture relevant internal variation, but not so many that the study loses coherence. Yin recommends that sub-unit selection be driven by the theoretical logic of the study, not by convenience. Two to six sub-units is common in published embedded single-case studies.
Can I mix quantitative and qualitative data in this design?
Yes. Case study is a research design, not a data collection method. Yin explicitly supports the use of both quantitative and qualitative evidence in case studies. For example, interview data (qualitative) from embedded sub-units can be combined with archival records or survey results (quantitative) to strengthen triangulation within the single case.
What counts as a 'real' embedded unit versus just multiple data sources?
An embedded unit is a sub-element of the case that has its own analytic standing — it is studied as a unit in its own right (e.g., a team, a ward, a phase) before its findings are integrated upward. Multiple data sources (interviews, documents, observations) are different: they are evidence types collected about the same unit, not separate sub-units. The distinction matters because embedded units require within-unit analysis, whereas data sources are triangulated at the same analytic level.
