Nomological Validity
Also known as: nomological network validity, construct network validity, nomological web validity
Nomological validity evaluates whether a construct behaves as theory predicts within a broader network of related constructs. It is not a single statistical test but an accumulation of evidence that the measure fits coherently into a web of theoretically grounded relationships — demonstrating that what is measured is what the theory says it should measure.

When to use it
Use nomological validity assessment when introducing a new scale or construct, when adapting an existing scale to a new population or language, or when theoretical claims about a construct's place in a broader causal model need empirical support. It is most informative when hypotheses are stated before data collection. Do not treat a post-hoc pattern of correlations as nomological evidence — data-driven interpretation of correlations is exploratory, not confirmatory. Avoid this framework when the theoretical network is poorly developed; without a prior map of expected relationships, there is nothing to validate against.

Is nomological validity the same as construct validity?
Nomological validity is one form of construct validity evidence, not a synonym. Construct validity is the overarching concept; nomological validity specifically concerns whether the construct's pattern of relationships with other constructs matches theoretical predictions. Other forms of construct validity evidence include convergent and discriminant validity (often assessed via the MTMM matrix or AVE/MSV criteria) and internal structure evidence from factor analysis.
What is a nomological network?
A nomological network is the theoretical map of a construct's expected relationships: which constructs it should be positively associated with, negatively associated with, and unrelated to. Cronbach and Meehl (1955) used the term 'nomological' (law-like) to emphasize that these relationships are grounded in theoretical propositions, not arbitrary correlations.
How is nomological validity different from convergent and discriminant validity?
Convergent validity asks whether the measure correlates highly with other measures of the same construct. Discriminant validity asks whether it is sufficiently distinct from measures of different constructs. Nomological validity subsumes both but is broader: it evaluates the entire pattern of relationships across the theoretical network, including directionality, magnitude, and coherence with causal theory.
Can SEM be used to assess nomological validity?
Yes, and it is often the preferred approach. A structural equation model can simultaneously estimate all the predicted paths in the nomological network, test whether the pattern fits the data, and compare alternative theoretical models. Path coefficients and model fit indices together provide richer nomological evidence than a series of bivariate correlations.
How many significant correlations are needed to claim nomological validity?
There is no fixed threshold. Nomological validity is a judgment about the overall pattern of evidence. The key criteria are: (1) the majority of directional predictions are confirmed, (2) magnitudes are in theoretically reasonable ranges, and (3) no critical prediction is strongly violated. Multiple studies converging on the same pattern provide stronger evidence than any single study.
