Short Form Nomological Validity

Short form nomological validity examines whether an abbreviated version of a psychological scale preserves the pattern of theoretically expected correlations with conceptually related and unrelated constructs. It is a cornerstone step in justifying the use of a shortened instrument in research and applied settings.

When to use it
Use short form nomological validity assessment whenever you develop or evaluate an abbreviated version of an established psychological scale. It is essential when the short form will be used in a new population, study design, or applied context where the full form was validated. Do not rely on internal consistency alone (Cronbach's alpha) or factor structure replication alone — these check the internal measurement model but not external relationships. Avoid this assessment as a standalone substitute for full construct validation; it should be reported alongside convergent–discriminant correlations and fit indices from CFA. Do not claim nomological validity from a single criterion variable; at least two theoretically distinct criteria (one convergent, one discriminant) are required.

- Directly tests whether the short form retains the construct meaning of the original by examining real-world correlational predictions.
- Provides empirical justification for deploying abbreviated scales in time-constrained research and applied settings.
- Can detect subtle construct drift that factor-analytic methods alone may miss.

- Embeds scale evaluation in theory, discouraging atheoretical item selection.
- Requires pre-specifying a theoretically grounded nomological network; results are only as defensible as the theoretical framework chosen.
- Sensitive to criterion reliability: if the external criterion is measured with error, correlations will be attenuated and comparison misleading.
- A shared method variance between the short form and criteria (e.g., same-source self-report) can inflate convergent correlations and mask true attenuation.
- Provides no single pass/fail cut-off; adequacy is a judgment call dependent on the tolerance set a priori.
- Does not assess whether the short form adequately samples the content domain — content validity must be evaluated separately.

How many criterion variables do I need to assess nomological validity?
At minimum two: one variable theoretically expected to correlate substantially with the construct (a convergent criterion) and one expected to show a weak or near-zero relationship (a discriminant criterion). Using only convergent criteria gives an incomplete and overly favorable picture.
How large a drop in correlation from long form to short form is acceptable?
There is no universally fixed threshold; common practice accepts attenuation of up to about 0.05–0.10 in absolute correlation magnitude. The tolerance should be stated before data analysis. Statistical significance of the difference can be tested with Steiger's or Meng's Z-test for dependent correlations.
Can I claim nomological validity if the short form has the same factor structure as the long form?
No. Factor structure replication (via CFA) confirms that the items still measure the same internal dimensions, but it does not show that the scale predicts what it should in the external world. Both internal structure and nomological network evidence are needed.
Is nomological validity the same as construct validity?
Nomological validity is one component of construct validity. Construct validity is the broader umbrella that includes content validity, internal structure, convergent and discriminant relationships, and criterion-related validity. Nomological validity specifically concerns the pattern of correlations with theoretically linked external variables.
What software can I use to test nomological validity?
Any general statistical package can compute correlations and regression coefficients. Tests for differences between dependent correlations (e.g., Steiger's test) are available in R packages such as cocor. SEM software (lavaan, Mplus, AMOS) can formalise the comparison within a multi-group or multi-form model.
