Technology Readiness Index

Technology Readiness Index (TRI) · Also known as: TRI, Parasuraman Technology Readiness

The Technology Readiness Index (TRI) was developed by Ajay Parasuraman in 2000 to measure individual propensity to adopt and use new technologies. The TRI assesses a person's personal attitudes toward technology across four dimensions: optimism, innovativeness, discomfort, and insecurity. Updated in 2015 with a streamlined 16-item version, the TRI helps identify technology adopter segments and predict behavior across diverse technology contexts.

When to use it

Use TRI to segment your user population before or during technology deployment, to predict adoption challenges, and to tailor training and change management strategies. TRI is valuable when introducing multiple new technologies to a diverse population, when assessing organizational digital transformation readiness, or when predicting adoption of emerging technologies (AI, blockchain, IoT) where user dispositional traits matter more than technology-specific perceptions.

Strengths
  • Stable, trait-based measure: assesses durable individual differences in technology propensity, not situation-dependent intentions
  • Cross-technology validity: predicts adoption of diverse technologies without technology-specific customization
  • Actionable segmentation: five-category adopter typology enables targeted change management and resource allocation
  • Streamlined measurement: 2015 16-item version reduces burden compared to original 36-item scale while maintaining reliability
Limitations
  • Limited scope: does not capture technology-specific perceptions (ease of use, usefulness) that strongly influence particular adoption decisions
  • Self-report bias: Likert responses may overstate true readiness, especially when social desirability influences answers
  • Dispositional vs. situational: high TRI does not guarantee adoption if external barriers (cost, poor design, organizational barriers) exist
  • Western-centric development: TRI was developed primarily in U.S. and English-speaking contexts; cross-cultural validation is ongoing

What is the difference between Technology Readiness Index (TRI) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)?

TRI measures a stable personality trait (how ready/eager people are for technology in general). TAM measures perceptions about a specific technology (is it useful, is it easy to use). TRI predicts who will voluntarily adopt first; TAM predicts who will accept a specific system. Use TRI for segmentation and change management strategy; use TAM for individual system adoption diagnostics.

How do I segment my population using TRI scores?

Calculate each person's composite TRI score (Optimism + Innovativeness − Discomfort − Insecurity). Then rank scores and segment into quintiles: top 20% = Explorers, next 15% = Pioneers, middle 30% = Pragmatists, next 20% = Skeptics, bottom 15% = Laggards. Alternative: use published cutoff scores if comparing against TRI norms. Visualize segment distribution to understand your population's technology readiness profile.

Can TRI change over time, or is it fixed?

TRI is designed as a trait measure, suggesting some stability. However, experience with technology can gradually shift TRI dimensions: discomfort decreases with experience, insecurity may improve with security education, innovativeness may increase with early success. Reassess TRI annually or after major technology implementations to track organizational readiness evolution.

Should I customize TRI items for my technology context?

The original TRI is intentionally context-independent to measure general technology readiness. For greater precision, supplement with technology-specific measures (e.g., 'I find this system easy to use,' 'This system is secure'). Do not alter core TRI items; if you customize, validate your modified instrument before deployment and report deviations from the standard TRI.
