Contextual Inquiry Method · Also known as: CI, Contextual Design, Work-centered Design
Contextual Inquiry is a field research method for understanding users by observing and interviewing them in their real work environment. Developed by Hugh Beyer and Karen Holtzblatt at Applied Research and Technology, this method combines ethnographic observation with targeted questioning to capture not just what users say they do, but what they actually do—including workarounds, informal practices, and priorities often invisible in lab settings. When to use it
Conduct Contextual Inquiry early in the design process to understand user needs and work context. Essential when designing for unfamiliar domains or when designer assumptions about work practice may be wrong. Best for capturing tacit knowledge, workarounds, and real-world constraints. Do not use for testing specific interface designs; use Think-Aloud Protocol or formal usability testing instead.
Strengths & limitations
- Captures actual work practice, not idealized or recalled behavior; reveals workarounds, constraints, and real priorities.
- Provides rich contextual insights: physical environment, tools, interruptions, social interactions that affect task performance.
- Uncovers tacit knowledge and informal practices that users cannot easily articulate in interviews.
- Builds authentic empathy and shared understanding among design teams; observations are more persuasive than abstract descriptions.
- Time-intensive: 4–8 site visits at 1–2 hours each, plus analysis, requires substantial investment.
- Requires trained researchers; quality depends on interviewing skill, cultural sensitivity, and ability to ask good contextual questions.
- Observer presence can change behavior (Hawthorne effect); some activities may not occur or be performed differently with observer present.
- Small sample sizes (4–8 users) may not capture diversity; findings may not generalize across user populations or contexts.
Frequently asked
How do I get permission to observe users and photograph their workspace?
Provide clear informed consent: explain the purpose, how data will be used, and assure confidentiality. Offer compensation if possible. Get signed consent before observing. Ask before photographing, and offer to hide or blur sensitive information (client names, account numbers). Be respectful of privacy and proprietary information.
What should I do if users behave differently because I'm observing them?
This is normal (Hawthorne effect). Mitigate by: (1) letting users become comfortable with you before asking questions, (2) focusing on repeated patterns rather than single behaviors, (3) conducting multiple sessions to see consistency, (4) interviewing about typical vs. observed behavior.
How many users should I observe, and how do I pick them?
Typically 4–8 users representing different roles or expertise levels. Pick diverse but representative users: if designing for accountants, observe novice, experienced, and power users. Continue until you see recurring patterns; you can stop earlier if patterns emerge clearly.
