Micro-phenomenology is a qualitative research method for exploring subjective experience through detailed, guided introspection. Developed by Claire Petitmengin, this method uses specialized interview techniques to help participants articulate pre-reflective, embodied experience—the lived moment-to-moment texture of interacting with a system. Unlike standard interviews (which ask abstract questions) or think-aloud protocols (which are concurrent and potentially disruptive), micro-phenomenology guides participants to re-live and describe specific moments of experience in granular detail, revealing tacit knowledge and non-conscious processes.

When to use it
Use Micro-phenomenology for deep, rich understanding of subjective experience when designing for emotional resonance, flow, or embodied interaction. Best for understanding moment-to-moment experience quality, not task efficiency. Particularly valuable for gesture-based, voice, or VR interfaces where embodiment is central. Do not use for quick usability identification; use heuristic evaluation or think-aloud for that.

Can I conduct micro-phenomenological interviews without participants re-doing the task?
Yes, you can interview about past experience. However, re-living (re-doing the task while narrating) produces richer, more accurate phenomenological description. If re-doing, limit task duration to 5–10 minutes so retrospection is immediate and memory fresh.
How do I analyze micro-phenomenological data?
Transcribe interviews and code for recurring themes and structures of experience. Look for: temporal patterns (moments of understanding, confusion), embodied qualities (sensations, gestures), emotional tones, and gaps between task intent and lived experience. Consult phenomenological analysis literature or work with trained analyst.
