AttrakDiff and the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) are assessment instruments for measuring user experience across multiple dimensions. AttrakDiff, developed by Marc Hassenzahl, evaluates the tension between pragmatic quality (functionality, usability, does the system do what I need?) and hedonic quality (beauty, emotional engagement, does it delight me?). The UEQ, developed by Schrepp and colleagues, extends this framework with additional dimensions including efficiency, perspicuity, stimulation, and novelty. Both instruments provide quantitative post-use assessment, complementing task-based usability testing with holistic experience evaluation.

When to use it
Use AttrakDiff/UEQ after users interact with products to holistically assess experience beyond task success. Most valuable for evaluating overall design quality, comparing competing products, and monitoring experience improvements over iterations. Particularly useful when emotional and hedonic factors are important (consumer products, creative tools). Do not use for identifying specific usability problems; use think-aloud or task-based testing for that.

What is the minimum interaction time before administering AttrakDiff/UEQ?
Aim for at least 5–10 minutes of meaningful interaction. Shorter interactions produce unreliable ratings, especially for hedonic dimensions. Ensure users complete realistic tasks, not abstract exploration.
How do I interpret AttrakDiff dimension scores?
Scores range from –3 to +3 per dimension. Positive scores indicate agreement with the dimension (e.g., +2 on 'beautiful' = perceived as beautiful). Plot dimension scores as a profile: identify highs and lows relative to the system's intended use case and competitors.
Should I use AttrakDiff or UEQ?
UEQ is more widely used and validated; more flexible dimensions. AttrakDiff focuses specifically on pragmatic-hedonic tension. Choose based on your priorities: if hedonic factors are central, use AttrakDiff; for comprehensive assessment, use UEQ.
