Heatmaps and scrollmaps are behavioral analytics tools that visually represent user attention and interaction on web pages and screens. Click heatmaps show where users click most frequently, visualized as color-coded density overlays. Scrollmaps show how far down pages users scroll and where they typically stop. These passive tracking methods collect aggregate data from hundreds or thousands of real users, revealing attention patterns, engagement hotspots, and content visibility issues without requiring direct user interaction or controlled studies.

When to use it
Use heatmaps and scrollmaps on live or high-traffic prototypes to understand aggregate user behavior patterns. Most valuable for optimizing layouts, identifying dead content, and validating design assumptions with large samples. Best for pages with adequate traffic (hundreds of sessions minimum). Do not use to diagnose why users behave a certain way; combine with qualitative methods (interviews, think-aloud) for explanation.

- Passive tracking avoids observer effects; users do not know they are being measured, so behavior is natural.
- Visual heatmap representation is intuitive and persuasive; stakeholders quickly grasp engagement patterns.
- Continuous data collection enables before/after comparison and iteration monitoring without repeated testing.
- Does not explain why users behave as they do; correlation without causation (e.g., few clicks may mean design is unclear or users already found what they needed).
- Heatmaps only track visible actions (clicks, scrolls); miss internal cognition, decision-making, and intent.
- Aggregate data masks individual variations; average user behavior may not represent any actual user.
- Requires adequate traffic; pages with < 500 sessions/month produce unreliable heatmaps due to noise.

What is a minimum sample size for reliable heatmaps?
500–1000 sessions is a reasonable minimum; heatmaps with fewer sessions are noisy and unreliable. For detailed analysis (comparing elements), 5000+ sessions are preferable. Traffic, time, or user sample size can all build the needed sample.
Are click heatmaps as reliable as scroll maps?
Equally reliable, but they measure different things. Click heatmaps show active engagement; scroll maps show passive consumption. A page with few clicks but high scroll may indicate engaging content that users consume naturally. Interpret together.
How do I know if scroll depth is 'good'?
No universal benchmark; it depends on page type and length. Blog posts might expect 50–70% average scroll; long-form content 30–40%. Compare against industry benchmarks for your page type, or compare before/after redesigns within your site.
