Pragmatic Laboratory Experiment — Practice-Oriented Experimental Design

A pragmatic laboratory experiment is a controlled study conducted in a laboratory setting that prioritises external validity and real-world applicability over the stringent internal controls characteristic of purely explanatory experiments. Drawing on the pragmatic–explanatory continuum formalised by Schwartz and Lellouch (1967) and later operationalised in the PRECIS framework, it asks whether an intervention works under conditions that approximate actual practice rather than ideal circumstances, making findings directly actionable for decision-makers and practitioners.

When to use it

Use a pragmatic laboratory experiment when the primary goal is to generate evidence that transfers to real-world practice — for example, when evaluating training programmes, human-factors interventions, cognitive tools, or behavioural treatments that will ultimately be deployed outside the lab. It is appropriate when stakeholders need to know whether an intervention is 'good enough' under realistic variability, not just whether it works under ideal conditions. Do not use this design when the research question demands maximum internal validity to isolate a specific mechanism; in that case an explanatory experiment with tight controls is more appropriate. Also avoid it when the sample of interest is highly heterogeneous but your lab recruitment cannot capture that diversity — the pragmatic intent will not be achieved.

  • Retains causal inference capability of controlled laboratory methods while improving ecological plausibility.
  • Broader eligibility criteria yield findings that generalise across the population of likely users or recipients.
  • Aligns research evidence more closely with what practitioners and policymakers actually need to know.
  • The PRECIS framework provides a transparent, systematic tool for communicating and justifying pragmatic design choices.
Limitations
  • Relaxed controls increase within-condition variance, reducing statistical power and requiring larger samples to detect the same effect size.
  • Partial standardisation makes it harder to identify which component of a complex intervention drives the observed effect.
  • Findings may be less replicable across sites if the 'realistic variation' included in one lab does not match that of another.
  • The pragmatic–explanatory distinction is a continuum, not a binary; communicating the study's position on that continuum requires additional reporting effort.

How is a pragmatic laboratory experiment different from a field experiment?

A field experiment is conducted in the participants' natural environment with minimal laboratory infrastructure. A pragmatic laboratory experiment is still conducted in a lab but deliberately relaxes the controls and eligibility constraints that would normally make lab results hard to generalise. It sits between a tightly controlled explanatory lab experiment and a fully naturalistic field study.

Do I need to use the PRECIS tool for my study?

PRECIS is not mandatory but is strongly recommended as a reporting and planning aid. It makes your design choices explicit across multiple dimensions — eligibility, setting, flexibility of intervention, outcomes, etc. — allowing readers to judge the degree of pragmatism and compare your study with others.

Will the increased variance hurt my ability to detect an effect?

Yes, allowing more real-world variability typically increases within-group variance and reduces effect sizes compared with tightly controlled explanatory designs. You should calculate sample size requirements specifically for a pragmatic study, using variance estimates that reflect realistic rather than ideal conditions.

Can a pragmatic laboratory experiment be randomised?

Yes. Randomisation of participants to conditions is fully compatible with a pragmatic design and is the preferred approach when feasible. The pragmatic label refers to the design choices around eligibility, delivery, and outcomes — not to the absence of random assignment.

When should I choose an explanatory experiment instead?

Choose an explanatory experiment when you need to understand whether and how a specific mechanism operates under ideal conditions — for example, when testing a theoretical prediction, isolating a causal pathway, or establishing proof of concept before pragmatic testing. The two approaches are complementary stages in a research programme, not competitors.
