Sustainable Consumption Scale
Also known as: SCS, Sustainable Lifestyle Scale
The Sustainable Consumption Scale (SCS) measures the extent to which individuals adopt sustainable and ethical consumption practices across multiple life domains including food, clothing, household products, transportation, and waste. Developed within ecological economics and consumer behavior frameworks (Sundström, 2014; Vermeir & Verbeke, 2008), the SCS captures integrated sustainable lifestyle rather than isolated green behaviors. The scale is widely used in research on sustainable consumption patterns, consumer segmentation for green marketing, and evaluation of sustainability interventions targeting lifestyle transformation.

When to use it
Use the SCS when assessing outcomes of sustainability education or lifestyle-change interventions targeting comprehensive behavior transformation (not single-action focus), comparing consumption patterns across demographic groups or geographic regions to understand sustainability adoption barriers and enablers, evaluating whether sustainability marketing successfully shifts purchasing across multiple domains, tracking lifestyle changes following major life transitions (relocation to urban center, parenthood, retirement, environmental awareness catalysts), and identifying which consumption domains show highest vs. lowest sustainability adoption in a given population for targeted intervention.

- Aggregation across domains masks critical gaps; someone scoring 70 (high overall) may achieve it through recycling perfection while consuming unsustainably in food and transport—a common pattern that SCS total score obscures
- Temporal instability; sustainability practices are often adopted in enthusiastic phases (New Year's resolutions, post-environmental-event periods) then abandoned. Single-occasion SCS does not distinguish sustained habit from temporary practice.

Is high SCS score actually better for the environment than low SCS?
Usually, but not absolutely. Someone scoring 80 on SCS through perfect recycling and secondhand clothing but driving a gas SUV daily may have higher environmental impact than someone scoring 50 through relocation to a walkable neighborhood and public transit adoption. Use SCS alongside actual footprint calculation (carbon, waste, water) to verify environmental outcomes.
How much do prices and availability of sustainable products affect SCS scores?
Substantially. Research shows SCS scores rise 15–25 points when sustainable alternatives become cost-competitive with conventional options, and 20–35 points when availability (e.g., farmers market opening, public transit improvement) increases. Report SCS alongside structural access measures; low SCS may reflect barriers more than motivation.
Can I predict someone's carbon footprint from their SCS score?
Moderately well (r = -0.55 to -0.70 in research samples). However, structural factors (home heating, car dependence, flights) often outweigh consumption choices. Someone in a cold climate with mandatory car commute may score moderate on SCS but have high footprint; someone in a mild urban area may score moderate but have low footprint. Combine SCS with actual footprint data or environmental impact inventories.
How stable is SCS over time? Do people sustain these practices?
Moderate stability (test-retest r = 0.60–0.75 over 6 months). High-SCS individuals maintain most practices, but some seasonal and cyclical variation occurs (post-holiday vs. February, summer vs. winter transit use). Habits formed through intrinsic motivation (identity, values) persist better than those from external pressure (r = 0.70 vs. 0.55). Measure again after major life changes (move, job change, family shifts) to capture shifts in constraints and opportunities.
