Classroom Environment Scale

Classroom Environment Scale (CES) · Also known as: CES

The Classroom Environment Scale is a comprehensive instrument measuring the social, emotional, and organizational climate of educational settings. Developed by Moos and Trickett in 1974, the CES assesses students' or teachers' perceptions of classroom relationships, instructional climate, and classroom management. By providing a multidimensional profile of classroom environment, the CES enables educators to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement in classroom culture, directly informing interventions to enhance student engagement, achievement, and well-being.

When to use it

The CES is ideal for school administrators, teachers, and educational researchers seeking to assess or improve classroom climate. It is valuable for curriculum review and school improvement planning, evaluating the impact of professional development or instructional redesign on classroom environment, understanding barriers to student engagement (e.g., if a low-achievement class scores low on Affiliation and Support), comparing classroom climates across grade levels or subjects to identify outliers, and research examining relationships between classroom environment and student outcomes (achievement, attendance, behavior, well-being). It is applicable to secondary classrooms; primary versions exist but with different norms.

Is a classroom climate high in Competition desirable?

Moderate competition can motivate some students, but excessive competition is associated with anxiety, reduced cooperation, and lower well-being—especially for students not winning. Research suggests optimal climate balances Task Orientation (focus on learning) with moderate Competition (goal focus) while maintaining high Affiliation and Support. Highly competitive climates often have low Affiliation.

What does a high Teacher Control score mean?

High Teacher Control (e.g., >7) indicates that the teacher uses strict discipline, provides close monitoring, and sets rigid expectations. This can be effective for maintaining order but, if combined with low Support, can feel authoritarian and demotivating. Effective classrooms often balance moderate Control with high Support and Innovation.

Should the teacher and student CES profiles match exactly?

No, but they should show general agreement. Small discrepancies (1–2 points per subscale) are normal. Large discrepancies (>3 points) are diagnostically meaningful: if a teacher perceives Support but students perceive Control, the teacher's intentions may not be matched by student experience. This gap is an entry point for dialogue and improvement.

How can a teacher improve classroom climate?

Specific strategies depend on the CES profile. Low Affiliation might be addressed through cooperative learning structures or community-building activities. Low Involvement might be addressed through more engaging instruction. Low Rule Clarity requires explicit rule-setting and consistent enforcement. The CES results guide which interventions will have the most impact.
