SWARA II

Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis - Improved (SWARA II) · Also known as: SWARA II, SWARA 2

SWARA II (Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis - Improved) is an enhanced variant of the SWARA method for deriving criterion weights from expert assessments. Instead of requiring pairwise comparisons or absolute weight assignments, SWARA II asks experts to rank criteria, then assess the relative importance of each criterion compared to the next-ranked one. Improved variants enhance robustness and interpretability of weight derivation.

When to use it

Use SWARA II when expert judgment is available and cognitive burden must be minimized. It is ideal for rapid decision-making, group decisions where consensus is needed, and situations where stakeholders are more comfortable with sequential ranking than with pairwise comparisons. Prefer it when the ranking is the key input; final weight values are derived, not directly elicited.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
  • Simpler expert task; ranking and stepwise comparison are more intuitive than pairwise matrices
  • Lower cognitive burden; fewer judgments needed than AHP or BWM
  • Transparent derivation; experts can see and validate the weight-computation process
  • Suitable for groups; consensus ranking can be derived from multiple experts' inputs
  • Reduced inconsistency; stepwise assessment is less prone to cycles than full pairwise comparison
Limitations
  • Still requires expert input; less objective than data-driven methods like CRITIC-M
  • Sensitive to ranking order; if the first criterion is poorly ranked, all downstream weights are affected
  • Assumes transitivity; if criterion A > B and B > C, then A > C. This may not hold in complex decisions.
  • Weight formula is deterministic; no mechanism to express uncertainty or probability distributions

Frequently asked

What if experts disagree on the ranking?

Use a consensus ranking (median rank, or voting) or run separate SWARA II for each expert, then aggregate weights. The latter preserves individual perspectives; the former simplifies but may not represent any single expert well.

How do I convert subjective importance (much more important) to percentages?

Develop a scale: 'much more' = 50%, 'moderately more' = 25%, 'slightly more' = 10%, 'about the same' = 0%. Have experts use the scale; then compute SWARA II. Always validate results with experts.

Can I use SWARA II if experts change their minds about the ranking?

Yes, within reason. If one or two adjacent criteria are swapped, re-run SWARA II. If the ranking changes significantly, investigate whether the initial ranking was stable or whether new information emerged. Document any changes.
