Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS)

The Mathematics Anxiety Rating Scale (MARS) is a self-report questionnaire assessing anxiety and worry related to mathematics learning and performance. Originally developed by Plake and Parker in 1982 with 98 items and refined to a 30-item version (MARS-30) in 1995, the MARS measures multiple facets of math anxiety: anxiety in test/evaluation contexts, mathematics learning contexts, and everyday numerical situations. It is widely used in educational psychology, mathematics education research, and clinical assessment to identify students with math anxiety and to evaluate interventions.

When to use it
The MARS is indicated for assessing math anxiety in secondary and post-secondary students (grades 6–college), and in adults seeking mathematics education (e.g., workplace training, adult numeracy programs). It is useful in educational counseling to identify students at risk, pre-intervention evaluation to quantify anxiety severity and subscale profile, treatment planning for cognitive-behavioral or skills-based interventions, and monitoring response to anxiety reduction programs or math tutoring. Less suitable for children below grade 6 (limited mathematical complexity exposure) or non-academic populations.

Is math anxiety a 'real' problem, or just lack of skill?
Math anxiety is real. Many highly skilled mathematicians experience it. Conversely, some students with lower mathematical ability manage anxiety well. Anxiety often interferes with performance via cognitive load (worry consumes working memory, leaving less for problem-solving). This is why anxious students sometimes perform worse than their ability suggests, and why anxiety reduction often improves performance even without additional skill training.
How is math anxiety different from math avoidance?
Math anxiety is the emotional/physiological response to mathematics. Math avoidance is the behavior—avoiding math courses, homework, or careers requiring mathematics. Anxiety + avoidance creates a reinforcement cycle: avoidance temporarily reduces anxiety, so students keep avoiding, leading to skill gaps and more anxiety. Breaking this cycle requires exposure (engaging with mathematics despite anxiety) combined with skill-building.
Can I overcome math anxiety without becoming 'good at math'?
Partially. Anxiety management (breathing, cognitive restructuring, exposure) can reduce emotional distress in math contexts. However, addressing skill gaps (through tutoring, practice, direct instruction) typically produces more durable improvement. Best outcomes combine both: students learn math skills while managing anxiety, building confidence through success experiences.
What are effective treatments for math anxiety?
Multimodal approaches: (1) Cognitive-behavioral therapy (challenging negative math beliefs, e.g., 'I'm not a math person'); (2) Mathematics tutoring/skill instruction (building competence); (3) Anxiety management (breathing exercises, progressive relaxation); (4) Exposure (practicing math problems, attending class despite anxiety); (5) Mindfulness-based approaches (observing worry without acting on it). Combined interventions are more effective than any single modality.
