Embryo transfer (ET) success evaluation is the systematic assessment of pregnancy establishment and calving outcomes following embryo implantation. Developed by reproductive physiologists in the 1970s-1980s, the method measures conception rates, pregnancy retention, calving rates, and calf viability to quantify the efficacy of ET programs and identify factors affecting outcomes. Success assessment is critical for optimizing ET protocols and managing investment in breeding programs.

When to use it

ET success evaluation is essential when operating an ET program, whether commercial or within a breeding herd. Use to establish baseline outcomes, evaluate the impact of protocol changes, identify high- or low-performing recipients, and assess the cost-effectiveness of ET relative to natural breeding or AI. Assumptions include accurate record-keeping, consistent pregnancy confirmation methodology, and follow-up to calving. Prefer comprehensive outcome tracking over early pregnancy rates alone.
