The total fertility rate (TFR) is the central period measure of fertility in demography: the average number of children a woman would bear over her lifetime if she experienced, at each age, the age-specific fertility rates observed in a given year. Computed by summing age-specific fertility rates across the reproductive ages, the TFR removes the influence of population age structure and gives a single, intuitive figure — children per woman — that is comparable across populations and over time.

When to use it

Use the TFR whenever you need a single, age-structure-free summary of fertility for a population in a given period, to compare fertility across countries or track it over time, or as an input to population projections. Assumptions and caveats: the TFR is a period synthetic-cohort measure, so it reflects the fertility schedule of one year and does not equal the completed fertility of any real cohort. Do NOT interpret a period TFR as 'the number of children women in this cohort will actually have' — when the timing of childbearing shifts (tempo effects), the period TFR is distorted downward during postponement and upward during recuperation, so it can temporarily diverge from cohort fertility. For studying the fertility of real birth cohorts, use cohort completed fertility instead, and consider tempo-adjusted TFR when timing is changing.

Why is replacement fertility about 2.1 rather than 2.0?

Two children would exactly replace two parents only if every girl survived to and through the reproductive ages and if exactly half of births were girls. Because slightly more than half of births are boys and some girls die before completing childbearing, the TFR must be a little above 2 — around 2.1 in low-mortality populations and higher where child mortality is substantial — for each generation to replace itself.

Does a TFR of 1.5 mean today's women will each have 1.5 children?

Not necessarily. The TFR is a period synthetic-cohort measure that combines this year's age-specific rates for women of different ages. If women are postponing births, the period TFR is temporarily depressed below what those women will ultimately complete. Cohort completed fertility, measured once a real cohort finishes childbearing, is the right measure for actual family size.

How does the TFR relate to the gross and net reproduction rates?

The gross reproduction rate (GRR) is essentially the TFR restricted to female births — the daughters a woman would bear. The net reproduction rate (NRR) further multiplies by survival, counting only daughters expected to survive to their mothers' ages. So TFR counts all children, GRR counts daughters, and NRR counts surviving daughters, the last being the true measure of generational replacement.
