Own-Children Method

The own-children method is an indirect technique for estimating age-specific fertility rates for the years preceding a census or survey, using only a single cross-sectional dataset in which children can be linked to their mothers within the same household. By reverse-surviving matched mother-child pairs back through time, it reconstructs annual birth rates and total fertility for roughly the previous 15 years without requiring any vital-registration data on births.

When to use it
Use the own-children method when birth registration is incomplete or absent but you have census or survey microdata that records household membership and the relationship of each person to the household head, allowing children to be matched to mothers. It is ideal for reconstructing fertility trends and differentials — by region, ethnicity, education, or birthplace — for the 15 years before a census. It assumes that the matching rule correctly assigns children to mothers, that available life tables adequately describe child and adult mortality, and that fertility differentials between matched and unmatched children are modest. Avoid it when household structures make mother-child matching unreliable (high fostering, institutional living), when no credible mortality schedule exists for reverse survival, or when you need fertility for years more than about 15 before the census, where errors compound.

How far back can the own-children method estimate fertility?
In practice it reconstructs annual age-specific fertility for roughly the 15 years before the census, corresponding to children aged 0 to about 14 who can still be matched to surviving, co-resident mothers. Estimates for the most recent years are the most reliable, while the earliest years suffer from accumulated child mortality, out-migration, and weakening mother-child co-residence, so analysts often truncate the series at 10-15 years before enumeration.
What happens to children who cannot be matched to a mother?
Unmatched children — orphans, fostered or adopted children, and those living apart from their mothers — must not simply be discarded, because doing so understates births. Standard practice tabulates them separately and allocates them across maternal age groups in proportion to the matched distribution, or applies adjustment factors. The reliability of the method hinges on keeping the share of unmatched children small and handling it explicitly.
Why must mothers as well as children be reverse-survived?
The fertility rate in a past year is births in that year divided by women exposed in that year. The census counts women at their current age, but the births occurred when those women were younger, and some women alive then have since died. Reverse-surviving women to their earlier ages reconstructs the correct denominator for each past calendar year, keeping the numerator (reverse-survived births) and denominator (reverse-survived women) consistent in time.
