Singulate Mean Age at Marriage
Also known as: SMAM, Hajnal's Mean Age at Marriage, Singulate Mean Age at First Marriage
The singulate mean age at marriage (SMAM) is an indirect demographic estimate of the average age at first marriage, computed entirely from the proportions of people who have never married by age, as recorded in a single census or survey. Introduced by John Hajnal in 1953, it sidesteps the need for registered marriage dates: by treating the never-married proportions as a synthetic-cohort survival curve in the single state, it recovers the mean number of years lived single before first marriage among those who eventually marry.

When to use it
Use SMAM when you need a comparable summary of marriage timing across populations or over time but lack registered first-marriage dates, having only census or survey tabulations of marital status by age. It is ideal for historical and cross-national comparison because it needs only one cross-section. Assumptions: first-marriage rates have been roughly constant over the recent past (so the cross-section approximates a cohort), mortality and migration are unrelated to marital status, and essentially no one marries before 15 or for the first time after 50. Do NOT use SMAM when nuptiality is changing rapidly (the synthetic-cohort assumption fails and SMAM lags real cohort change), when remarriage or divorce contaminate the never-married category, or when proportions single at 45–54 are unstable due to small samples or misreporting.

Why does SMAM cap marriage at age 50?
First marriages after age 50 are rare in almost all populations, so age 50 is taken as the effective end of the first-marriage process. The proportion still single at 45–54 is treated as permanent celibacy, and the person-years calculation accumulates single time only up to 50. In populations with appreciable late first marriage this cap introduces a small downward bias.
How does SMAM differ from the mean age at marriage computed from registered marriages?
Registered-marriage means are period rates weighted by the number of marriages at each age and require vital-registration data. SMAM instead reconstructs the mean from the stock of never-married people by age in a single cross-section, so it can be computed where no marriage registration exists. The two agree only when nuptiality has been stable; under change SMAM, being a synthetic-cohort measure, diverges from any real cohort's experience.
Can SMAM be computed separately by sex?
Yes, and it routinely is. Because men typically marry later than women, male SMAM usually exceeds female SMAM, and the gap is itself a studied feature of marriage systems. Each sex's SMAM is computed independently from that sex's proportions never married by age.
