Coale's fertility indices are a set of standardized measures — If (overall fertility), Ig (marital fertility), Ih (nonmarital fertility), and Im (proportion married, an index of marriage) — that express a population's childbearing relative to the highest reliably recorded natural-fertility schedule, that of the Hutterites. Devised by Ansley Coale for the Princeton European Fertility Project, they hold the maximum age schedule of fertility fixed so that differences between populations reflect real differences in fertility and marriage rather than age structure, and they tie together into a single identity linking overall fertility to marriage and to fertility within and outside marriage.

When to use it

Use Coale's indices when comparing fertility levels across populations or historical periods that differ in age structure and marriage patterns, and when you want to separate the marriage component from fertility within marriage. They are the classic tool for studying historical fertility transitions because they need only births and women by age and marital status, available from many historical censuses. Assumptions: the Hutterite schedule is a valid common maximum, age and marital-status data are reasonably accurate, and births can be split by marital status. Do NOT use them when nonmarital childbearing is large and poorly measured (Ih and the decomposition become unreliable), when only total births are available (Ig and Im cannot be formed), or as absolute fertility rates — they are ratios to a standard, not rates like the total fertility rate.

Why are the indices standardized to Hutterite fertility?

The Hutterites of the early 20th century practiced no contraception and had excellent records, giving demographers the highest reliably measured age schedule of marital fertility. Using it as the denominator means each index expresses how close a population comes to this natural-fertility ceiling, putting all populations on a common 0-to-1 scale that removes age-structure effects.

What does a falling Ig signal in the European Fertility Project?

A sustained decline in Ig indicates the spread of deliberate fertility limitation within marriage, since marital fertility is dropping below the natural-fertility maximum. The project used the date when Ig fell irreversibly by about ten percent to mark the onset of the fertility transition in each province.

How do Coale's indices relate to the total fertility rate?

Both summarize fertility, but the TFR is an absolute period rate (children per woman) while Coale's indices are dimensionless ratios to the Hutterite standard. Coale's indices additionally decompose fertility into marriage and marital-fertility components, which the TFR does not, and they require less detailed data, which is why they dominate historical fertility studies.
