Type I og Type II fejl

I hypoteseafprøvning kan to typer fejl opstå: Type I-fejl (falsk positiv, forkastelse af en sand nulhypotese) og Type II-fejl (falsk negativ, undladelse af at forkaste en falsk nulhypotese). Formaliseret af Neyman og Pearson (1933) er disse fejl kernen i statistisk beslutningstagning. Sandsynligheden for Type I-fejl kontrolleres af signifikansniveauet α (konventionelt 0,05); sandsynligheden for Type II-fejl er β, og styrke = 1 − β. Forståelse og afbalancering af disse fejl er afgørende for design af robuste, pålidelige undersøgelser.
