嵌入式多层混合方法设计将一个次要的定性（或定量）研究线索嵌套在主要研究中，该主要研究跨越了层级组织的多个层级——例如，学生在班级内，员工在组织内，或患者在诊所内。主导性研究线索在结构层面解决研究问题，而嵌入式组成部分则在层级结构的不同层面丰富理解，产生单独任何一条线索都无法获得的互补性见解。
