纵向多案例研究是一种定性研究设计，通过在延长时间内进行重复的数据收集波次，来考察两个或多个有界案例。通过追踪每个案例随时间的变化并比较案例间的模式，研究者可以记录现象如何变化、稳定或分化——既能深入每个地点，又能广泛覆盖不同地点，这是单一案例或一次性调查无法提供的。
