Upwevu mkubwa wa mvuto hutokea wakati vitu vizito (makundi, galaksi) vinapotengeneza nuru kwa nguvu sana hivi kwamba picha nyingi za vyanzo vya mbali huonekana, au pete kamili (pete za Einstein) huundwa. Ilipendekezwa na Sjur Refsdal mwaka 1964 na kuonekana kwa mara ya kwanza katika 0957+561 mwaka 1979, upwevu mkubwa hutoa vipimo vya moja kwa moja vya raia wa vitu vinavyopinda nuru na umbali wa ulimwengu bila kutegemea kipimo cha ngazi ya umbali.
