Evaluative Priming

Evaluative priming, introduced by Fazio and colleagues in 1986, is the foundational reaction-time paradigm for measuring automatic attitudes. On each trial an attitude object (the prime) is briefly presented and is quickly followed by a clearly positive or negative target word that the participant categorizes as 'good' or 'bad' as fast as possible. When the prime and target share the same valence -- a liked object followed by a positive word -- responses are faster; when they mismatch, responses slow. This congruency effect reveals that merely seeing an attitude object automatically activates its associated evaluation, which then facilitates or interferes with judging the target. Because the attitude is inferred from response speed rather than self-report, evaluative priming gives a window onto spontaneous evaluations and became, in its 'bona fide pipeline' form, an early standard for measuring implicit attitudes including racial prejudice.

When to use it
Use evaluative priming when you want a reaction-time measure of automatic, spontaneous evaluations that does not require participants to report or even attend to their attitudes, and when you want to study the conditions under which attitudes are activated automatically (attitude strength, accessibility, context). It is valuable for prejudice research, attitude-behavior models, and theoretical work on automaticity. It is less appropriate when high measurement reliability per participant is critical, since trial-level reaction-time measures can be noisy, or when the research question concerns deliberate beliefs better captured by self-report. Careful control of stimulus characteristics and SOA is essential, because the automaticity the paradigm targets depends on a short prime-target interval.

The congruency effect is the reaction-time advantage for trials where prime and target share valence over trials where they conflict. It indicates that seeing the prime automatically activated an evaluation that then sped up matching judgments and slowed mismatching ones. The size and direction of this effect for a given prime reveal the participant's automatic attitude toward what the prime represents.
Why does the prime-target interval (SOA) matter so much?
Evaluative priming depends on the prime's evaluation being activated automatically and still active when the target appears, but before controlled processing intervenes. A short SOA (around 300 ms) captures this automatic window; a longer interval gives participants time to engage strategic processing, which can wash out or reverse the effect. SOA is therefore a critical design parameter that must match the automaticity the researcher wants to measure.
How does evaluative priming differ from the AMP?
Both exploit the automatic activation of affect, but evaluative priming infers attitudes from reaction-time facilitation while categorizing valenced targets, whereas the AMP infers them from misattributed pleasantness judgments of neutral targets. Evaluative priming directly indexes response speed and is theoretically tied to attitude accessibility, while the AMP tends to be more reliable and easier to administer, so the two are often compared as complementary implicit measures.
