Affect Misattribution Procedure
Also known as: AMP, Affect Misattribution Task, Inkblot for Attitudes
The Affect Misattribution Procedure (AMP), introduced by Payne, Cheng, Govorun, and Stewart in 2005, is an implicit measure of attitudes built on a simple cognitive error: people misattribute the feeling evoked by one stimulus to another. On each trial a brief affective prime (such as a Black or White face, or a positive or negative word) is flashed, followed by a neutral target -- typically an unfamiliar Chinese pictograph -- which the participant rates as more or less pleasant than average while being explicitly told to ignore the prime. Because the prime's affect bleeds into the judgment of the ambiguous target, the proportion of pleasant ratings following positive versus negative primes yields an index of the attitude toward the primes. The AMP proved remarkably reliable and resistant to control, and it predicts self-reported attitudes, voting intentions, and intergroup bias, making it one of the most widely used implicit measures alongside the Implicit Association Test.

When to use it
Use the AMP when you need an implicit, indirect measure of evaluative attitudes -- especially toward groups, brands, political figures, or behaviors -- where social desirability or limited introspective access make self-report suspect. It is attractive for its strong reliability relative to other implicit measures, its flexibility in choice of primes, and its ease of online administration. It is less appropriate when the construct of interest is a deliberate, well-articulated belief that respondents can and will report honestly, where direct measures are more efficient, or when participants become aware of the prime-judgment link and intentionally use or counteract it. Researchers should include checks for prime awareness and intentional strategies, since some respondents can deliberately let primes guide their ratings.

How can a measure work if it relies on participants making an error?
The AMP turns a robust cognitive bias -- misattributing the source of one's affect -- into a measurement tool. Because the prime's affect spills onto the judgment of the ambiguous target despite instructions to ignore the prime, the resulting bias systematically tracks the participant's evaluation of the primes. The error is not random noise but a lawful effect, so averaging over many trials yields a reliable index of attitude.
Can people fake or control their AMP responses?
Mostly the misattribution is hard to suppress, which is why the AMP resists deliberate control better than self-report. However, research shows some participants who become aware of the prime-judgment link can intentionally let the prime drive their ratings, which can distort scores. Good practice therefore includes post-task awareness probes and instructions designed to discourage intentional strategies.
What does the AMP measure that a questionnaire does not?
The AMP captures automatically activated affect toward an object -- the quick evaluative reaction that arises before deliberation. This can diverge from what people report, either because they lack introspective access or because they edit answers for social desirability. The AMP is therefore most useful for sensitive attitudes, such as intergroup bias, where direct questions are likely to be contaminated by self-presentation.
