Affective Priming Task

The affective priming task, developed by Hermans, De Houwer, and Eelen in 1994, demonstrates that stimulus evaluation is automatic and goal-independent. Like evaluative priming it pairs a valenced prime with a valenced target, but instead of asking participants to judge the target's valence it asks them simply to pronounce or name the target aloud as fast as possible. Targets are named faster when preceded by an affectively congruent prime than an incongruent one, even though the naming task never requires evaluating valence. This is a crucial theoretical point: because evaluation facilitates responding even when it is irrelevant to the task, the affective reaction must be triggered automatically and unintentionally. The naming variant became an important tool for distinguishing genuinely automatic evaluation from response-competition artifacts that can arise in valence-classification tasks.

When to use it
Use the affective priming (naming) task when you need to establish that automatic evaluation occurs independently of any evaluative goal, or when you want an implicit attitude measure less vulnerable to the response-competition confound of valence-classification paradigms. It is well suited to theoretical questions about the automaticity and mechanism of evaluation. It is less convenient than classification or AMP tasks because voice-onset timing is technically demanding and noisier, and like other reaction-time difference measures it can have limited individual-score reliability. Stimulus matching and accurate voice-key calibration are essential to valid latencies.

Why use a naming task instead of a good/bad judgment?
In a good/bad judgment task, a prime could speed responses simply by activating the correct response key, a response-competition artifact rather than genuine evaluation. The naming task requires only pronouncing the target, so there is no valence-based response to prime. Congruency facilitation in naming therefore shows that evaluation occurred automatically and independently of the task.
What does goal-independent evaluation mean?
It means the mind evaluates stimuli as positive or negative without being instructed to and even when evaluation is irrelevant to the current task. The naming affective priming effect demonstrates this: people evaluate primes spontaneously, and that evaluation influences an unrelated naming response. Evaluation is thus a pervasive, automatic feature of stimulus processing rather than a deliberate step.
Why is voice-onset measurement a challenge?
Naming requires detecting the precise moment speech begins, typically via a voice key triggered by sound amplitude. Variability in pronunciation, breathing, and microphone sensitivity introduces noise and occasional misfires, making latencies harder to measure cleanly than keypresses. Careful calibration and trial screening are needed, which is one reason the naming variant is less common than classification tasks.
