Mere Exposure Paradigm

The mere exposure paradigm, established by Robert Zajonc in 1968, shows that simply being repeatedly exposed to a stimulus, with no reinforcement or even conscious recognition, increases liking for it. In the canonical procedure, participants are exposed to novel stimuli -- unfamiliar ideographs, foreign words, faces, or melodies -- different numbers of times, and then rate how much they like each one; liking rises as exposure frequency rises, typically following a positive, decelerating curve. The effect occurs even when stimuli are presented subliminally and participants cannot recognize them, indicating that familiarity breeds liking through an affective rather than cognitive route. Zajonc's demonstration that 'mere' repeated exposure suffices to shape attitudes became foundational for theories of preference formation, the affect-cognition relationship, and applications from advertising to interpersonal attraction.

Use the mere exposure paradigm when studying how familiarity shapes attitudes, preferences, and attraction, or when testing theories about the relationship between affect and cognition (for example whether liking can precede or bypass recognition). It is valuable for research on advertising, branding, interpersonal attraction, and aesthetic preference, and for examining subliminal influence. It is less appropriate when stimuli are already familiar or strongly valenced, when overexposure (which can reduce liking through boredom) is a concern, or when the question concerns reasoned evaluation rather than affective familiarity. Counterbalancing stimuli across exposure levels and controlling recognition are essential to valid inference.

Does the mere exposure effect require conscious recognition?
No. One of Zajonc's most important findings is that liking increases with exposure even when stimuli are presented subliminally and participants cannot recognize them above chance. This dissociation between liking and recognition supports the idea that mere exposure works through a low-level affective or fluency mechanism rather than deliberate, memory-based judgment.
Can repeated exposure ever decrease liking?
Yes. The relationship is positive but decelerating, and excessive exposure can lead to satiation or boredom that reverses the effect. Overly simple stimuli satiate faster than complex ones, and spacing of exposures matters. Researchers therefore choose stimulus complexity and exposure levels carefully to stay within the range where exposure enhances rather than diminishes liking.
Why must stimuli be novel and counterbalanced?
If stimuli are already familiar or carry prior associations, any liking difference could reflect those associations rather than exposure within the study. Using novel stimuli and counterbalancing which items appear at which exposure frequencies ensures that increased liking is attributable to the manipulated number of exposures, not to the particular items chosen.
