Overføringslæring med CNN gjenbruker et konvolusjonelt nevralt nettverk som allerede er trent på et stort datasett — oftest ImageNet — og tilpasser dets lærte detektorer for trekk til et nytt, ofte mindre måldatasett. Dette lar forskere oppnå sterk bildegjenkjennelsesytelse uten de massive beregnings- og datamessige ressursene som kreves for å trene et CNN fra bunnen av.
