Digitale Institutionele Etnografie (Digitale IE) past Dorothy E. Smiths kader van institutionele etnografie toe op digitale en online omgevingen. Het onderzoekt hoe institutionele 'ruling relations' — de teksten, beleidsregels en coördinatiemechanismen die het dagelijks leven van mensen organiseren — functioneren via digitale infrastructuren zoals platforms, softwaresystemen, online documenten en algoritmische processen. Het doel is om zichtbaar te maken hoe digitale hulpmiddelen en teksten ervaringen coördineren en ondergeschikt maken aan institutionele belangen.
