Lapenes seguma novērtēšana, ko formalizējuši Jennings un kolēģi pionieru darbos par meža tropu struktūru, izmanto vairākas metodes — no lauka novērojumiem līdz sarežģītai attālās izpētes un sauszemes LiDAR — sniedzot būtiskus datus par meža struktūru, gaismas pieejamību un biotopu raksturlielumiem, kas ir svarīgi ekoloģijā, mežsaimniecībā un klimata pētniecībā.
