비판적 구성주의 근거 이론은 캐시 샤마즈(Kathy Charmaz)의 구성주의 근거 이론에 명시적인 비판 이론적 렌즈—일반적으로 페미니즘, 비판적 인종 이론, 또는 프레이리안(Freireian) 프레임워크—를 결합하여 사회적 과정을 설명할 뿐만 아니라 참여자의 경험을 형성하는 권력 관계, 구조적 불평등, 이념적 힘을 심문하는 이론을 생성한다. 그 결과는 해방적 의도를 가진 근거 이론이다.
