요약Disability autoethnography is a qualitative method in which a disabled researcher uses their own embodied experience and everyday interactions as ethnographic data to analyze how disability is lived, performed, and positioned. In Devva Kasnitz's 2020 Current Anthropology article on the politics of disability performativity, she analyzes recorded dialogues from her own life with mobility and speech impairments to examine her biopolitical positioning as disabled, connecting intimate encounters to ableism and the disability-justice movement. The method's distinctive premise is that the disabled researcher is not a neutral observer of disability but a privileged knower whose own experience is a legitimate and revealing source of theory. The capability approach to disability, articulated by Sophie Mitra in 2006 by adapting Amartya Sen's capability framework, defines disability as a deprivation of capabilities or functionings that arises from the interaction between a person's characteristics (including impairment), their resources, and the personal, social, and environmental conversion factors that turn resources into real opportunities. Rather than locating disability in the body (the medical model) or solely in society (the strong social model), it locates disability in the gap between what a person is actually able to do and be and what they could do and be. This reframing gives disability studies a measurement-friendly account that distinguishes potential from actual disability.
