Because the research goal is exploratory — uncovering structure rather than testing a predetermined hypothesis — the design is especially valuable in emerging topic areas where theory is underdeveloped and the relevant variables are not yet well understood. | Exploratory factor analysis reduces a large set of observed variables into a smaller number of latent common factors.
