ऑनलाइन मीट्रिक लर्निंग (Online Metric Learning) नए लेबल किए गए उदाहरणों या युग्मित बाधाओं (pairwise constraints) के आने पर, पूर्ण डेटासेट को संग्रहीत किए बिना, धीरे-धीरे एक महलानोबिस दूरी मीट्रिक (Mahalanobis distance metric) को अनुकूलित करता है। यह ऑनलाइन लर्निंग की दक्षता को मीट्रिक लर्निंग की प्रतिनिधित्व शक्ति के साथ जोड़ता है, जिससे यह स्ट्रीमिंग, बड़े पैमाने पर, या लगातार बदलते वातावरण के लिए उपयुक्त हो जाता है जहाँ शुरुआत से पुनः प्रशिक्षण अव्यावहारिक है।
