זיהוי קהילות מכוונות מזהה קבוצות צמתים המקושרות בצפיפות ברשת מכוונת, תוך התחשבות באסימטריה של הקשתות (למשל, A עוקב אחרי B אינו מרמז ש-B עוקב אחרי A). התאמת קריטריונים של מודולריות או מבוססי זרימה לגרפים מכוונים חושפת אשכולות ששיטות בלתי מכוונות מחמיצות באופן שיטתי, מה שהופך אותה לחיונית עבור רשתות ציטוטים, גרפי עוקבים ומסלולים רגולטוריים ביולוגיים.
