אומד התאמת נתוני פאנל מזהה השפעות טיפול סיבתיות על ידי התאמת כל יחידה שטופלה ליחידת ביקורת אחת או יותר החולקות היסטוריות דומות של משתנים נלווים בתקופות שלפני הטיפול. על ידי ניצול המבנה האורכי של נתוני פאנל, הוא שולט הן במסיחים משתנים בזמן שנצפו והן במאפייני יחידה יציבים, ומעריך את אפקט הטיפול הממוצע על המטופלים (ATT) ללא צורך בהנחת מגמות מקבילות.
