Where inductive scenario methods build narratives bottom-up from combinations of driving forces, the archetype method starts top-down from Jim Dator's empirically distilled typology of generic futures and asks what each archetype would look like for this particular question. When to use it

How does the archetype method differ from the two-axis (intuitive logics) scenario method?

The two-axis method is inductive: analysts identify the most important and most uncertain drivers, cross two of them to form a matrix, and let the four quadrants define the scenarios. The archetype method is deductive: the four scenario logics are fixed in advance as continuation, collapse, discipline, and transformation, and domain content is mapped onto them. Archetypes guarantee divergence and avoid the difficulty of choosing axes, but they sacrifice the chance to discover scenario structures that emerge organically from the drivers. Bishop, Hines and Collins treat both as legitimate, complementary families.

Are the four archetypes meant to be predictions?

No. Like the broader Manoa approach, the archetypes are a basis set chosen for divergence, not a slate of forecasts to be ranked by probability. Their job is to span the space of plausible futures so that a strategy can be tested for robustness across all of them. Asking which archetype is 'most likely' misuses the method; the right question is how a decision fares under each, and what early signals would indicate the world is moving toward one rather than another.

How does this relate to the Manoa Alternative Futures Method?

They share the same four generic images but emphasize different things. The Manoa Alternative Futures Method is the broader Hawai'i-School process of stretching stakeholders' images of the future, heavily seeded by emerging-issues scanning and oriented toward imagination and visioning. The archetype method focuses specifically on using those four images as deductive scenario templates for a defined strategic question, foregrounding the mapping of drivers and the comparative, robustness-oriented application of the resulting scenario set.
