Manoa Alternative Futures Method

The Manoa Alternative Futures Method is the signature technique of the Hawai'i Research Center for Futures Studies, developed by Jim Dator at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Its founding axiom is that 'the future' cannot be predicted, only alternative futures can be imagined, so the purpose of foresight is not a single forecast but a set of qualitatively different images broad enough to bound the space of what might plausibly happen. Dator's central empirical claim, distilled from decades of futures work, is that the enormous variety of credible long-range scenarios collapses into four generic images: continued growth, collapse, discipline, and transformation. Why exactly four futures, and where do they come from?
The four — continued growth, collapse, discipline, and transformation — are not derived from first principles but distilled empirically: Dator found that across hundreds of futures studies the credible images of the future repeatedly clustered into these four generic patterns. They function as a basis set chosen to be maximally divergent, so that whatever actually unfolds is likely to resemble some blend of them. The number four is a pragmatic balance between covering the possibility space and keeping the set small enough to work with intensively in a workshop.
How is this different from probabilistic forecasting or trend extrapolation?
The Manoa method explicitly rejects prediction. Rather than estimating which future is most likely, it builds several that are deliberately different and treats them all as serious. Trend extrapolation lives almost entirely inside the 'continued growth' image; the other three are designed precisely to capture the discontinuities that extrapolation misses. The payoff is not accuracy about one future but robustness and imagination across many, which is what long horizons and emerging issues demand.
What role do emerging issues play in the method?
Emerging issues are the seeds of discontinuity. By scanning the fringe for developments that are barely visible today but rising in salience, the analyst gives each of the four images concrete, surprising content and keeps them from collapsing into familiar extrapolation. The same emerging issue can play opposite roles in different images — a catalyst of transformation in one, a trigger of collapse in another — which is exactly what makes the resulting futures both divergent and plausible.
