Food Consumption Score
Also known as: FCS, WFP Food Consumption Score, Weighted Food Group Frequency Score
The Food Consumption Score (FCS) is the World Food Programme's standard household food-security indicator, defined in its 2008 VAM technical guidance. It is a weighted measure of dietary diversity and frequency: enumerators record how many days in the past week a household consumed each of a set of standard food groups, those frequencies are capped at seven and multiplied by weights reflecting each group's nutritional importance, and the weighted sum yields a score from zero to 112. Households are then classified as having poor, borderline, or acceptable food consumption using standard thresholds. Validated against caloric and other food-security measures by Wiesmann and colleagues at IFPRI, the FCS is widely used in emergency and development food-security assessments because it is fast, cheap, and proxies both diet quality and adequacy.

When to use it
Use the FCS when you need a rapid, low-cost, standardized indicator of household diet quality and food access for emergency assessments, vulnerability mapping, targeting, or monitoring, especially within WFP-aligned systems where its thresholds and comparability are established. It works well as a snapshot of consumption and as a complement to coping and hunger measures. It is less suited to precise nutritional assessment, since it uses frequency rather than quantity and ignores portion sizes and intra-household distribution, and its standard weights and thresholds may need contextual adjustment where habitual diets differ markedly. For individual nutrient adequacy, pair it with dietary recalls or dietary diversity scores rather than relying on the FCS alone.

Why are food groups weighted differently in the FCS?
The weights reflect the relative nutritional importance and density of each food group. Animal-source foods like meat, fish, and dairy provide high-quality protein and micronutrients and so carry the highest weights, pulses an intermediate weight, staples and vegetables modest weights, and sugar and oil low weights. This means a day of consuming meat contributes more to the score than a day of consuming sugar, so the FCS rewards not just dietary variety but the nutritional quality of that variety.
Why cap each food group at seven days, and what about multiple servings in a day?
The FCS measures how many of the past seven days a household ate from each group, so the maximum any group can contribute is seven days. Eating a group more than once in a single day still counts as one day for that group; the cap prevents very frequent consumption of one food from dominating the score. This keeps the index a measure of weekly diversity and frequency rather than of total quantity consumed.
Should the standard poor/borderline/acceptable thresholds always be used?
The standard thresholds (21 and 35) are the default and enable comparability, but WFP guidance allows raising them by seven points in contexts where oil and sugar are consumed almost daily, because frequent consumption of these low-nutrition but high-weight-by-frequency items can otherwise push scores into the acceptable range without reflecting a genuinely adequate diet. Any threshold adjustment should be documented and applied consistently so that classifications remain comparable.
