The Individual Dietary Diversity Score (IDDS) is a simple, rapid count of the number of distinct food groups an individual consumed over the previous 24 hours, used as a population-level proxy for diet quality and micronutrient adequacy. Standardized in the FAO's 2011 Guidelines for Measuring Household and Individual Dietary Diversity by Kennedy, Ballard and Dop, the IDDS rests on the observation, reviewed by Ruel, that more diverse diets tend to be more nutritionally adequate. The score is obtained from a qualitative recall of everything eaten, mapping foods to a standard set of nine food groups and counting how many groups appear. Because it requires no portion weighing or food-composition tables, it is cheap to collect at scale and has become a workhorse indicator in nutrition surveys, food-security monitoring, and program evaluation.

When to use it

Use the IDDS when you need a rapid, low-cost, population-level proxy for diet quality and micronutrient adequacy and cannot afford full quantitative dietary assessment. It is well suited to large nutrition and food-security surveys, baseline and endline measurement for nutrition-sensitive agriculture or social-protection programs, and seasonal or cross-group comparisons of diet quality. It is appropriate when enumerators can be trained to conduct an open 24-hour recall and decompose mixed dishes, but it is not the right tool when you need absolute nutrient intakes, individual-level diagnosis, or the specific micronutrient-adequacy framing for women of reproductive age (use MDD-W) or for young children (use the IYCF minimum dietary diversity). Because a single 24-hour recall reflects only one day, IDDS describes groups, not the habitual diet of any one person.

How many food groups does the IDDS use, and why nine?

The FAO individual-level indicator uses nine food groups: starchy staples; dark green leafy vegetables; other vitamin-A-rich fruits and vegetables; other fruits and vegetables; organ meat; meat and fish; eggs; legumes, nuts and seeds; and milk and milk products. Nine groups are used because the individual score is oriented toward micronutrient adequacy, so it separates vitamin-A-rich and iron-rich animal-source foods that drive nutrient quality. This contrasts with the twelve-group household indicator, which is broader and oriented toward food access rather than individual nutrition.

Is the IDDS a quantitative measure of how much someone ate?

No. The IDDS is purely qualitative: it records only whether at least one food from each group was consumed, never the amount. Each group contributes at most one point regardless of portion size or frequency. This is by design — it keeps data collection cheap and fast and avoids the need for scales and food-composition tables — but it means the score captures the breadth of the diet, not its volume or energy content. For absolute intakes you need a quantitative 24-hour recall or weighed food record.

Can I use one person's IDDS to judge their nutrition?

Not reliably. The IDDS is built and validated as a population-level indicator, and it rests on a single 24-hour recall, which reflects just one day rather than a person's habitual diet. Day-to-day variation in eating means any individual's one-day score is noisy. The appropriate uses are comparing groups, tracking trends, and evaluating programs at the population level, where individual noise averages out and the mean score becomes an informative measure of diet quality.
