The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is the most widely used instrument for measuring occupational burnout—a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment in response to chronic workplace stress. Developed by Christina Maslach and Susan Jackson in the early 1980s, the MBI has become the standard reference for burnout assessment in research, occupational health, and clinical practice across helping professions and other high-stress occupations.

When to use it
The MBI-HSS is appropriate for screening and diagnosing burnout in human service workers (healthcare, mental health, social work, education) and other high-stress occupations. It is valuable in occupational health research, intervention trials evaluating workplace wellness programs, and organizational assessments of staff well-being. It is less suitable for non-helping professions without occupational stress; adapted versions (MBI-General Survey, MBI-Educators) may be more appropriate in those contexts.

What is the difference between burnout and depression?
Burnout is specifically an occupational syndrome characterized by exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced efficacy in response to workplace stress. Depression is a broader psychiatric disorder affecting mood, cognition, and functioning across life domains. Burnout can contribute to depression, and depressed individuals may experience high burnout at work, but they are distinct constructs. Using both the MBI and a depression scale provides comprehensive assessment.
Which MBI version should I use?
The MBI-HSS (Human Services Survey) is appropriate for healthcare, mental health, social work, and education. The MBI-GS (General Survey) is for other occupations. The MBI-ES (Educators Survey) provides educator-specific items. Check your population and occupational field; using the wrong version can give misleading cutoff interpretations.
How are the three subscales interpreted together?
Burnout is characterized by high Exhaustion + high Depersonalization + low Personal Accomplishment. However, individuals can have high exhaustion without depersonalization (engaged overwork) or depersonalization without exhaustion (cynical disengagement). Examine all three dimensions; each tells a different story about the type of occupational stress and needed intervention.
What are appropriate interventions for high burnout?
Burnout is primarily an organizational problem, not an individual failure. Interventions should target: workload/staffing, schedule flexibility, autonomy, social support, and organizational culture. Individual stress management helps but cannot overcome systemic problems. The most effective approaches combine individual support with organizational change.
How stable is the MBI over time?
Test-retest reliability over 1–2 weeks is high (r > 0.82). Over 1–2 years, correlations decline to 0.40–0.60, reflecting both measurement error and genuine changes in occupational stress and burnout. The MBI captures both trait-like (stable vulnerability) and state-like (responsive to work conditions) components of burnout.
