Exhaustion and Disengagement Scale

Exhaustion and Disengagement Scale (EDIS) · Also known as: EDIS, Energy Assessment Module (EAM)

The Exhaustion and Disengagement Scale (EDIS), based on work by Shirom and colleagues, is a brief burnout assessment tool measuring two core dimensions of occupational burnout: emotional, physical, and cognitive exhaustion, and psychological disengagement from work. Developed in the early 2000s, the EDIS emphasizes the depletion and withdrawal that characterize burnout, with particular attention to physiologic and cognitive fatigue rather than interpersonal dimensions. It is widely used in occupational health research, particularly in European and Israeli occupational health contexts.

When to use it

The EDIS is appropriate for occupational health research, longitudinal studies examining burnout progression, and intervention trials. It is valuable when a brief, two-factor instrument is preferred over multi-dimensional tools. It is used in organizational health assessments and occupational medicine for individual risk identification. It is less appropriate when detailed understanding of burnout subtypes (emotional exhaustion vs. depersonalization vs. reduced accomplishment) is needed; the Maslach Burnout Inventory provides finer granularity.

What is the difference between Exhaustion on the EDIS and Emotional Exhaustion on the Maslach Burnout Inventory?

EDIS Exhaustion includes emotional, physical, and cognitive depletion; it is broader than MBI Emotional Exhaustion alone. EDIS captures fatigue across multiple domains. MBI Emotional Exhaustion is narrower, focusing on emotional depletion. EDIS may be preferred when comprehensive fatigue assessment is desired; MBI is preferred when emotional exhaustion plus depersonalization and accomplishment distinction is needed.

Can low Exhaustion with high Disengagement indicate burnout?

Yes. Some chronically disengaged workers report moderate fatigue; they have withdrawn from work psychologically but have adapted to manage demands without acute exhaustion. This pattern suggests chronic cynicism or job mismatch, not acute crisis. Intervention should address meaning and fit rather than only fatigue management.

What EDIS scores predict health consequences?

Research links EDIS scores >4.0-5.0 to increased cardiovascular risk, depression, and health service use. However, thresholds vary by study and occupational group. Longitudinal studies show that increasing EDIS scores over time predict subsequent health problems, even if absolute scores are modest. Trajectory matters as much as cross-sectional level.

Is the EDIS or MBI better for measuring burnout?

Both are valid. The EDIS is briefer and focuses on depletion and disengagement; ideal for time-constrained settings or longitudinal studies. The MBI is more comprehensive, capturing emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and accomplishment; ideal for detailed profiling. Choice depends on context and available detail desired.
