When to use it
Use a bibliometrix-assisted rapid review when a research question requires a structured, documented survey of a literature field within a tight timeline — typically two to eight weeks — and when quantitative mapping of publication trends, key authors, and thematic clusters adds value beyond a simple narrative summary. It is well suited to policy briefs, grant background sections, and early-stage research design where a full systematic review is not feasible. It requires bibliographic records exportable from Web of Science or Scopus and a working R environment. Do not use this approach when the question demands comprehensive evidence on clinical effectiveness or safety (prefer a Cochrane-style systematic review with meta-analysis), when grey literature must be included extensively (bibliometrix handles journal databases only), or when the team lacks basic R proficiency.

Is a bibliometrix-assisted rapid review the same as a bibliometric analysis?
No. A bibliometric analysis is a standalone quantitative study of publication patterns and is not required to address a specific practice or policy question. A rapid review is an evidence synthesis method with a structured question, explicit inclusion criteria, and a narrative synthesis. The bibliometrix-assisted rapid review uses bibliometric tools to accelerate the mapping phase of a rapid review; it is not purely a bibliometric study.
Do I need advanced R skills to use bibliometrix?
Basic R proficiency is sufficient for most bibliometrix functions. The package ships with a built-in Shiny web interface (Biblioshiny) that requires no coding and covers the main analytical outputs. Researchers comfortable with loading packages and running provided scripts can complete an analysis without writing custom code, though R scripting enables greater reproducibility and flexibility.
How many records can bibliometrix handle?
bibliometrix scales well for most review purposes. Datasets of 5,000 to 50,000 records are handled comfortably on a standard laptop. Very large exports (over 100,000 records) may require memory optimization or a server environment, but such volumes are unusual for rapid reviews given their intentionally narrow scope.
Should I register a bibliometrix-assisted rapid review protocol?
Yes, protocol registration is strongly recommended. PROSPERO accepts rapid review protocols, and pre-registration of search strategy, inclusion criteria, and planned analyses protects against post-hoc changes and increases the credibility of the findings. The bibliometrix script itself can be shared as a supplementary file to support full reproducibility.
