bibliometrix-assisted Bibliometric Analysis

bibliometrix-assisted bibliometric analysis is a structured quantitative approach to mapping a scientific field using the bibliometrix R package. Developed by Aria and Cuccurullo (2017), it provides an integrated environment for importing bibliographic records from Scopus or Web of Science, computing performance indicators, building co-authorship and citation networks, and generating thematic maps — all within a reproducible R or Shiny workflow.

When to use it

Use bibliometrix-assisted bibliometric analysis when the goal is a comprehensive, reproducible quantitative map of a scientific field or topic based on a large corpus of bibliographic records (typically 200 or more documents). It is the right choice when you need both performance indicators and network/thematic analyses in one integrated workflow, and when transparency through a fully scripted R environment matters. It is not appropriate for small corpora (fewer than ~100 records) where network sparsity undermines clustering, for qualitative synthesis of study findings, or when the research question requires assessment of study quality rather than publication patterns. Do not confuse it with a systematic review — bibliometrix maps who publishes and how knowledge clusters, but does not extract or appraise study results.

Strengths
  • Single integrated R environment covers data import, descriptive statistics, network analysis, and thematic mapping without switching tools.
  • Full reproducibility: the R script plus the raw export file exactly recreate every result.
  • Handles large corpora efficiently — thousands of records are processed in seconds.
  • Produces publication-ready network graphs, thematic maps, and descriptive tables directly.
  • Active open-source development with a companion Shiny app (biblioshiny) that lowers the barrier for non-coders.
Limitations
  • Requires access to Scopus or Web of Science for high-quality metadata; free sources (PubMed, Google Scholar) provide incomplete reference data.
  • Results depend heavily on the completeness and accuracy of bibliographic records — missing references distort network structure.
  • Network clustering and thematic maps require expert interpretation; software output labels clusters but does not explain their intellectual meaning.
  • Cannot assess the methodological quality or content validity of individual studies — complementary qualitative reading is always needed.

Do I need programming skills to use bibliometrix?

Basic R literacy is sufficient for the core package; the companion biblioshiny Shiny app provides a point-and-click interface that covers most analyses without writing code. For reproducibility and custom analyses, an R workflow is strongly preferred.

How many records do I need for a meaningful analysis?

There is no hard minimum, but networks become too sparse for reliable clustering with fewer than around 100 documents. Most published bibliometrix studies work with 200–5000 records. Very large corpora (tens of thousands of records) run efficiently but may require filtering to a focused subset to produce interpretable maps.

Can I use Google Scholar data with bibliometrix?

Google Scholar exports (via Publish or Perish) lack complete reference lists, which makes co-citation and bibliographic coupling networks unreliable. Scopus and Web of Science exports are strongly preferred. For fields not well covered by these databases, PubMed exports can be used for performance descriptives but not for full network analysis.

Is bibliometrix-assisted bibliometric analysis the same as a systematic review?

No. A bibliometric analysis maps publication patterns, citation structures, and thematic clusters — it does not extract or synthesise research findings. A systematic review appraises study quality and synthesises results to answer a specific clinical or empirical question. Bibliometrix-assisted analysis is often used as a preparatory or complementary step to frame a field before conducting a more targeted review.

How do I report a bibliometrix study in a journal article?

Report the database(s) searched, the exact search string, the date of search, the number of records retrieved and retained, and the bibliometrix version. Describe each analysis type (performance, network, thematic) and the parameters chosen (e.g., clustering algorithm, minimum citation threshold). Provide the R script or Shiny session settings as supplementary material to enable replication.
