Visual elicitation thematic analysis (VETA) is a qualitative method that uses photographs, drawings, or other images as interview stimuli to provoke richer verbal accounts, then subjects those accounts to systematic thematic analysis. By grounding conversation in concrete visual material, the method unlocks meanings, memories, and tacit knowledge that purely verbal questioning often fails to reach. It is widely used in health, education, community, and organisational research.

When to use it
Use VETA when the research question involves experiences, identities, perceptions, or meanings that are embodied, spatial, or emotionally laden — topics where visual anchoring is likely to unlock richer accounts than words alone. It is especially well suited to studies with populations who find verbal-only questioning difficult (children, people with communication differences, marginalised communities). It is appropriate when you can collect semi-structured interview data and have time for dual-layer coding. Do not use it when purely verbal data are sufficient, when the research question calls for quantitative description or generalisation, or when participants cannot meaningfully engage with visual material (e.g., participants with significant visual impairment unless adapted stimuli are used). Photo-voice subvariants require ethical care around image ownership and confidentiality.
Strengths & limitations
- Visual anchoring produces richer, more specific verbal accounts and surfaces tacit or embodied knowledge that standard interviews miss.
- Thematic analysis provides a transparent, systematic, and well-documented analytic procedure that supports methodological rigour.
- Highly flexible: images can be researcher-provided, participant-generated, archival, or drawn, making the approach adaptable across disciplines and settings.
- Particularly effective with children, older adults, and community participants who engage more naturally with images than with abstract verbal prompts.
- The dual-layer coding scheme (image + talk) captures meaning at multiple levels simultaneously.
- Data collection is logistically demanding — managing images, recording interviews, and linking transcripts to specific visual stimuli adds complexity.
- Ethical risks are heightened when participants take their own photographs; issues of privacy, consent, and image ownership must be addressed explicitly.
- Thematic analysis is analyst-intensive and requires skill in coding; without clear coding protocols, results can appear subjective.
- As a hybrid method, VETA is not always indexed as a single term in databases, making it harder to cite precedents and situate the study in the literature.
- Findings are context-specific and not statistically generalisable; the method is unsuitable when population-level estimates are required.
Frequently asked
Do participants have to take their own photographs, or can I supply images?
Either approach is legitimate and each has trade-offs. Participant-generated photographs (photo-voice) give participants more agency and tend to produce personally meaningful images, but introduce ethical complexity around privacy and consent for identifiable third parties. Researcher-supplied images are easier to manage ethically and useful when participants cannot easily produce images, but the researcher must justify the image selection. The choice should be driven by the research question and ethical context, and documented in the methods section.
How is this different from standard thematic analysis?
Standard thematic analysis works solely from verbal data — interview transcripts, focus group recordings, or documents. VETA adds a visual stimulus layer: the images actively shape what participants say and become an additional layer of analytic data. Coding explicitly tracks which image prompted which account, enabling the analyst to interrogate the relationship between visual and verbal meaning. This makes VETA particularly suited to embodied, spatial, or experiential topics where verbal prompts alone are insufficient.
How many participants do I need?
The same guidance that applies to thematic analysis generally applies here: 6–30 participants is the typical range, with conceptual saturation (the point at which new interviews add no new themes) as the key criterion. Because VETA interviews tend to be richer and more detailed than standard interviews, smaller samples often reach saturation earlier. Fewer than six participants makes it very difficult to identify patterns that transcend individual accounts.
Can VETA be used deductively as well as inductively?
Yes. Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis framework accommodates both inductive (data-driven) and deductive (theory-driven) approaches, and VETA inherits this flexibility. A deductive VETA study would specify a theoretical framework in advance and apply it to both the visual stimuli selection and the coding process. Researchers should be explicit about which orientation they have taken and why, as the two orientations have different epistemological implications.
How do I handle image confidentiality in published outputs?
Any image that contains identifiable individuals requires explicit consent from those individuals before publication, even if the participant who photographed it has consented. Common strategies include anonymising images (cropping, blurring faces), obtaining additional consent forms for identifiable third parties, or substituting illustrative images that are not the actual data images. Researchers should establish a confidentiality protocol at the study design stage and document it in the ethics application.
