Visual elicitation qualitative content analysis (VEQCA) is a qualitative research approach that combines the use of visual stimuli — photographs, drawings, images, or artifacts — to prompt participant responses, and then applies systematic qualitative content analysis procedures to interpret and categorize the resulting verbal or textual data. The method harnesses the unique cognitive and communicative power of images to surface meanings that purely verbal questioning may not reach, while retaining the rigor of explicit, rule-governed content analysis.

When to use it
Use VEQCA when your research question concerns how participants perceive, interpret, or assign meaning to visual phenomena — physical environments, health conditions, social situations, cultural objects — and when you need both the depth of image-prompted disclosure and the systematic rigor of an explicit coding framework. It suits health sciences, environmental research, education, media studies, and social policy where visual evidence is central. It is not appropriate when participants have no meaningful connection to the visual stimuli, when ethical barriers prevent image use (e.g., clinical photography without consent), or when the research question calls for a process-oriented theory (prefer grounded theory) or a purely structural linguistic analysis (prefer discourse analysis). It requires more preparation time than standard interviews and demands careful image ethics management.

What is the difference between photo elicitation and visual elicitation?
Photo elicitation specifically refers to the use of photographs as interview stimuli, following the tradition established by Collier (1957) and theorized by Harper (2002). Visual elicitation is a broader term that encompasses any visual stimulus — drawings, maps, diagrams, video stills, or artifacts — used to prompt participant responses. VEQCA applies to any of these visual modalities, not only photographs.
Should I develop the coding frame before or after data collection?
This depends on your epistemological stance. A deductive approach develops the frame from theory or prior literature before analysis begins, testing pre-specified categories against the data. An inductive approach derives categories from the data itself, developing and refining the frame iteratively. A combined approach starts with broad deductive categories and adds inductive sub-categories. All three are legitimate in qualitative content analysis; the choice must match your stated methodology and research question.
How do I handle inter-coder reliability in a qualitative content analysis?
Inter-coder reliability (often reported as Cohen's kappa or percentage agreement) is appropriate if you are working with a second coder and a finalized coding frame. A kappa above 0.70 is typically considered acceptable. However, many qualitative content analysis studies use a single coder with a detailed audit trail of coding decisions as the primary trustworthiness mechanism. If you use reliability statistics, report them alongside — not instead of — a description of the iterative frame-development process.
Can I use participant-generated images instead of researcher-selected ones?
Yes. Participant-generated image approaches such as photovoice or diary photography give participants control over what is documented, shifting interpretive power toward them. The resulting images are then used as elicitation stimuli in interviews or focus groups. This participatory variant is compatible with VEQCA, but it adds steps — briefing participants on image production, managing data volumes, and addressing ethics around self-generated sensitive content — that must be planned in advance.
How many participants do I need?
There is no fixed number, but VEQCA studies typically involve 10–30 participants in individual elicitation interviews, or 3–6 focus groups. The relevant criterion is whether the category system has reached saturation — the point at which new data no longer produce new categories or substantially modify existing ones. Because image stimuli generate focused, concentrated responses, saturation can sometimes be reached with smaller samples than in purely open-ended interview designs.
